09.25, Tommi starts in
Sisteron.
We are by the défilé de Pierre
Ecrite, about 3 km after the start.
With the Nr. 1 Tommi
came up
like a missile. As you can imagine, to take some pics was difficult.
But we had some success. Second arrival was Carlos with his new Focus WRC
Nr. 6 passing without any problems. The difference to the leading EVO of
Tommi is quite enourmous: about 1m50s. |

The weather is
beautiful,
the sky blue, the road dry. Than it's time for Gardemeister and the Seat
WRC number 8. Colin follows with another Focus WRC and than Kankunnen with
the Impreza WRC. Thiry with the first semi official Toyota, Freddy Loix
with the second EVO 6, the swiss Burry with another Toyota follows. After
Another Toyota (Lundgaard) and the two Skoda WRC the long list of EVOs
Group N starts. Stohl, Galli, the champion Trelles, Maselli, Popovic went
trough with an incredible note of noise.It's time to change place. We
start our motors and start moving to the Turini

We are not the only who try
to move to the Turini. On the road, a lot of traffic. With a good
co-driver we try to take some little road, and save time. On the way we
pass St.André les Alpes and the service place. Looking in the back, yes,
we have a red car, Nr. 2: Freddy Loix closed to our rear bumper...
After 2 hours driving we
reach the Col de Turini.

The atmosphere is
special.
Thousands of spectators waiting for the first cars. Like in a derby,
looking around we can read in the eyes of these people the passion for
this sport. To stay there, in the cold, waiting to see the best way to
pass the two bends. |

And than, HE comes up. The
red EVO of Tommi with his simple Nr.1. The noise, the flame of the exhaust
system. The lights on. A few seconds and he turns in the second bend and
bye, down in the forest again.
Carlos
follows. Driving with
care, he comes up very fast; turns right, turns left and... again, his
Focus desappears in the forest too. The next is the Seat. The two
officials of Seat Sport mess the speed with a laser gun. 74 kmh... and
than we wait for Colin. One minute, and then another 10 seconds. The crowd
begins to be nervous.Where is Colin... another 10 seconds, and another 10
seconds. The Ford officials asks for information... and the bad new
arrives like Colin should have arrived. The Focus stays at the km 14. Motor
broke down. We can read the disappointment in the eyes of the Ford crew.
But the Rally must go on. So it's time for the Toyotas and for the Skodas.
As the second Skoda spun a 180 after the first bend, the people cry like in a
Corrida. The Skoda driver turns the car, and restarts. Leaving behind on the road his rear
spoiler.
It's time for the Group N
and the Evos Armada come up. The co-driver of the swiss silver EVO 6
streches his arm in the air. Yes it is a moment of glory to pass the
Turini. Like Sandro Munari in the seventies, on his Lancia Stratos. Or
like Walter Röhl, with his Audi Quattro. It's time to go. The silence of
the forest returns. Till January 2001. Till the new and old champions will
come back. To win. |

But the Monte is not only
driving. No. The assistance in the night is the opportunity to speak
with the crew of each team. An unique experience, as you can see. |
